STEDELIJK BASE brings together nearly 700 highlights from the Stedelijk collection to show the evolution of art and design from 1880 until now. It is the first-ever major, integrated presentation of art and design in the history of the museum.

Joseph Beuys was one of the most significant and influential artist of the twentieth century, expanding the scope of art into the realms of politics, society and ecology. This exhibition, the first major presentation of works by Beuys in Belgium since the 1980s, seeks simultaneously to consider Beuys’ activities in Antwerp, alongside his relevance to a new generation.
Wearing futuristic goggles, Masja Arnouts restores Hendrik de Meyer’s painting, Departure of the Spanish Occupation Troops from Breda on 10 October 1637. The final result is on display in our exhibition From castle to station.
The Castle of Breda and the new railway station are just a few hundred metres apart. The castle symbolises Breda’s history, while the station represents the future. Photographer Jeroen Jongeneelen climbs the tower of the Grote Kerk to capture both buildings in a single image.
