Zuiderzee fishermen were not particularly keen on pearls because the latter were popular with the upper class. This inspired jewel designer Ted Noten to make the work entitled The Revenge of the Pearl Necklace.

Ted Noten (Swalmen, 1956) is a designer of bags and jewelry. Noten is know for his bags and jewelry made by casting objects in blocks of acrylate. His work has been acquired by Dutch and international museums.

In this video, Ted Noten tells the viewers how he became the designer he is now. He also tells the story of The Revenge of the Pearl Necklace, a work of art he made upon an invitation of the Zuiderzee Museum. It is the skeleton of a pike carrying a chain of black pearls in its belly. The object is a metaphor of the story that the Zuiderzee fishermen were not particularly keen on pearls, because pearls were popular with the upper class. The pike in which Noten hid the pearls slowly decayed, thereby revealing the necklace hidden inside. It need hardly be said that, at the time, the rotting process was a pretty horrible sight, not to mention the stench that hung in the museum for quite a while …
