On The Move - Elisabeth Tonnard

A short interview with Elisabeth Tonnard, selected for On the Move with the publication One Swimming Pool (2013).

A swimming pool that you can either keep on your bookshelf or install on the ground. Whichever you choose, you won’t get wet when you dive into Elisabeth Tonnard’s book, One Swimming Pool. Tonnard (Leerdam, NL, 1973) has based the work on American artist Ed Ruscha’s iconic 1968 photo book, Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass. The title of Ruscha’s conceptual work equates to the artist’s self-imposed task: to document nine swimming pools and a broken glass.

Tonnard’s clever reworking of his book also puts the reader to work: by arranging the 1,575 sheets of One Swimming Pool side by side, he or she can produce a life-size reproduction of one of Ruscha’s photographs of a swimming pool. But the process is irreversible – removing the pages will destroy the book in its bound form.
