The moment the mundane loses its clear sense of familiarity and gains new meaning – this is what Elspeth Diederix (1971, Nairobi) tries to capture in her photography. For that reason her work is often described as a 'rearrangement of everyday objects, leaning toward surrealism'. The experience and meaning of her work lie mainly in the refined beauty of a newly arranged reality that might seem dreamlike or surreal, but is by no means absurd or irrational: a cloud of plastic bags in the sky.
The short film Plastic Bag (2011), a collaboration between Diederix and Dutch video artist Jeroen Kooijmans following the purchase of her photograph Cloud (2003), focuses on Diederix’ fascination with the concept of a plastic bag. In a subtle, connotative way the film explores her artistic vision and inspirations as well as her body of work.
