A church service at Kees van Dongen

00:06:51 125 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Devotional deliberations at the sarcophagus of fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck, singing hymns at the water installation of the contemporary artist Olafur Eliasson: for more than ten years, church services have been held in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.

This video gives an impression of the latest in this series, a service at the exhibition The big eyes of Kees van Dongen. The church service is led by a liturgist who provides the devotions or sermon and an art historian who sketches the art historical context.

The service is not an event in which art works are used to illustrate a devotional talk, nor is it a tour with spiritual moments. The aim is a performance with its very own meaning. A liturgy that is spread over the exhibition like a dream and which evaporates at the final amen.
