Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

Discover the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

The Gemeentemuseum is a place to win your heart. From staircase to grand café, wherever you go there is something wonderful to discover. The pristine Art Deco building, built in 1935 and designed by top Dutch architect H.P. Berlage, is simply made to surprise and delight the wandering visitor. The galleries flooded with natural light are the perfect place to view top works by iconic 20th-century masters like Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Constant, Francis Bacon and Louise Bourgeois. Elsewhere in the building there are colourful Sol LeWitt murals and pieces by contemporary artists such as Panamarenko, Marlene Dumas, Frank Stella and Daniel Richter.

A brief stroll beside the Berlage-designed pond in front of the Gemeentemuseum brings you to the building that is home both to the Hague Museum of Photography and to the GEM, Museum of Contemporary Art. This is the place to see not only the international cream of today’s art world, ranging from paintings and sculpture to massive walk-in installations, but also top photographic works – art photography, news photos and portraits – dating from the richly productive twentieth century and right through to the present.
